The soft light of 6:00–9:00 and cloudy or post-rain days give the best shots. In the rainy season the mist and high flow are spectacular; bring a tripod and a macro lens.
How the waterfall changes between the rainy and dry seasons, when there is more flow and fewer people, and what to bring by time of year in Valle de Bravo.
Overview
The flow of the waterfall depends on recent rainfall. In the rainy season (June–September) the falls become spectacular and the canyon fills with green and mist. In the dry season (November–May) the weather is more stable for hiking, although the water volume drops.
| Season / months | Typical weather | Flow & water | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry–cool Dec–Feb | Mild days 18–24 °C, cold nights (5–10 °C) | Moderate flow; the curtain is clear and defined | Ideal for hiking; bring layers and a jacket |
| Dry–warm Mar–May | Hot days (up to ~28–30 °C at noon), very high UV | Lower flow as the season advances | Hike early; shade, hat and plenty of water |
| Rainy Jun–Sep | Nearly daily afternoon rain; occasional storms | Maximum flow: the falls become spectacular; slippery ground | Visit in the morning; do not cross swollen streams or approach the edge |
| Transition Oct–Nov | Mild 18–26 °C, little rain | Good flow easing down; comfortable water levels | Excellent balance of scenery, weather and few crowds |
Actual flow depends on rainfall in recent weeks. Check the live weather before travelling and do not swim in unmarked pools.
By your plan
The soft light of 6:00–9:00 and cloudy or post-rain days give the best shots. In the rainy season the mist and high flow are spectacular; bring a tripod and a macro lens.
The dry season is more comfortable for walking with children: less mud and better footing. Use the lower viewpoint by the entrance and the rest areas, and watch minors on wet rocks.
From November to May the weather is stable and pleasant for the full trail. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen; midday from March to May can be very hot.
Common questions
From June to September, at the height of the rainy season, the flow is at its maximum and the waterfall looks most spectacular: the water curtain widens and the canyon fills with green and mist. It is the best time to see it powerful, though the ground is more slippery.
Weekdays and the transition months (October and November) usually have fewer visitors than weekends, holidays and school breaks (Easter, summer). Arriving early also helps avoid crowds.
In the dry, cold season (December–February) nights drop to 5–10 °C and days are mild at 18–24 °C. In the canyon, shade and mist can cool the morning; a jacket is advisable.
Easter week is one of the busiest times of the year. The waterfall looks good in the warm-dry season, but parking fills very early and trails are more crowded. Arrive at dawn if you travel then.
The soft morning light (6:00–9:00) and cloudy or post-rain days give the best shots: the water curtain is well defined and the mist enhances the canyon. Avoid the intense midday sun in the dry season.
